FAIR TRADE
In this part of the
world, people usually sway in their hammocks
between two trees on a warm summer afternoon,
simply as relaxation. Not so in South America,
where many people traditionally sleep in their
hammocks at nighttimes, these have served as
beds for generations.
Traditional hammock production in Brazil started
running into trouble a few years ago, however,
as increasing volumes of cheap foam mattresses
from the Far East threatened to replace the
hammock as the normal bed. Numerous manufactures
were forced to close down and many jobs were
lost in Ceara, the poorest region in Brazil.
One of these hammock factories, which had stood
empty for years, is the birthplace of AMAZONAS.
Together with a Brazilian, they bought the complex
in 1996, renovated the buildings and purchased
new weaving looms. The pace of growth was so
fast that, in 2002, the old buildings were torn
down and replaced by a new, state-of-the-art
production hall. The modern hall has been equipped
with additional looms and a new dust extraction
system to ensure a dust-free working environment.
The export of AMAZONAS hammocks today provides
more than 100 workers with a secure job. The
majority of them is paid two to three times
the minimum legal wage, which offers them and
their families a steady income. In addition,
they enjoy social standards which are largely
unheard of in the rural areas of Brazil, such
as social security, health insurance and paid
holidays.
Exports to Europe provide further benefits
for the workers. The quality of the raw materials
we use corresponds to European standards. The
environmental compatibility of the dyes used
does not just help the rivers and streams in
Brazil, but also means a healthy working environment
for the workers who process the dyed cotton.
Also, ear muffs for hearing protection are used
practically nowhere else except in our factory.
In order to ensure the high quality of our
products, we furthermore have our hammocks analysed
at regular intervals for azo dyes, heavy metals,
formaldehyde and other pollutants. So that you
can relax with complete peace of mind!
FSC - well managed forests
The wood in the products bearing this sign
comes from well managed forests, independently
certified in accordance with the rules of the
Forest Stewardship Council.
TÜV – the symbol for your safety
The TÜV certificate is the German seal
which certifies the safety of a product. The
product is subjected to a range of standardised
technical procedures, testing the product in
its destined application area. This seal of
safety is particularly important for applications
which concern children. You can recognize our
TÜV-certified product range by the pictured
seals.
The material dreams are made of
In the hammock and baby product sector in Germany
and also internationally, AMAZONAS is increasingly
becoming a synonym for high quality and stability.
Last but not least because we can constantly
make improvements to the benefit of our customers
thanks to our direct contact with our manufacture
in Brazil. We are always receptive for your
suggestions and look forward to a lively exchange
with our retailers and all experienced AMAZONAS
hammock users.
All our Brazilian hammocks and hanging chairs
are made of 100% cotton. We guarantee that the
colours are AZO-free!
Öko-Tex Standard 100
The tested components comply with the Öko-Tex
Standard 100 requirements.
Nylon makes the difference
As opposed to the cheap polyester that is often
used, nylon is:
much kinder to the skin, allowing it to breathe
much more comfortable, as the elastic material
stretches
much more stable, as we use extra-strength 210
T nylon that withstood three times the maximum
load in laboratory tests.
Amazonas-Traveller/Moskito-Traveller - Highest
Quality
We achieve additional safety through welded,
sewn-in loops for hanging, and stronger hanging
cords than those conventionally used.
The material is checked by an independent laboratory
and is free of harmful AZO substances.
In the King-Size-Format of 220 x 140 cm, even
tall people can relax comfortably.
