Some things to look out for when buying hammocks ?

Here are some details to look for when considering which hammock to buy.

1. Hammocks With Cadejos

Cadejos is the Spanish word for chains. This refers to the twisted plaits at each end of the hammock. These look beautiful and they help to distribute the weight perfectly which gives better comfort and balance. This technique is common with Colombian hammocks, but not so common on hammocks made elsewhere.

2. Where is it made ?

Hammocks have a long tradition in Colombia and Brazil. There are some traditional design differences between the two countries. One of these is the open loop at the end. This makes it quicker and easier to hang the hammock in different places and again distribute the weight a bit better. It is a tiny difference, maybe more aesthetic than anything else, but something to consider.

3. Which Materials Are Used ?

Many of our Hamaca hammocks are made from recycled cotton. This is many times kinder to the environment than organic cotton. The recycled cotton comes from Mexico where it is spun in to yarn and dyed before being shipped to Colombia to be woven. Cotton is very nice and soft. If you want the ultimate in strength and fade resistance, then choose a hammock made from polyester or Sunbrealla or a mix of cotton and polyester.

4. Good Working Conditions ?

Some of the people working in the hammock factory we use in Colombia have been working there for 25 years! Staff turnover is very low due to the good working conditions. You can see videos and interviews at the Colombian factory here.

5. Extra Thick And Strong Material

When we chose the thickness of the fabric and the strength capacity of the strings, we made everything at the highest practical level. This means the hammock fabric is thicker and stronger and the strings will be durable for many many years. We simply noted the specifications of competitors hammocks and upgraded them a bit.

Why buy a double hammock over a single hammock ?

A double hammock is one that is big enough for two adults to relax in comfort.

I would say the minimum width of fabric for a traditional hammock to be counted as a double hammock is 150cm. For a hammock with spreader bars which will hold the fabric open, i would say 130cm is wide enough to fit two adults.

For the traditional cotton hammock, 150cm+ allows two people to lay side by side.

You can also just about fit two adults in a single hammock, but in a double hammock you can even create your own area with a soft ridge in between. You can easily lay top and tail like this, almost like having two hammocks.

So, the first reason to buy a double hammock is that it is big enough for two people.

You don't have to always have two people in the hammock of course. We have 3 boys. My youngest is still a baby, but I can hang with my older two in the hammock. I guess that technically makes it a triple hammock, but there is plenty of room while my boys are still under 130cm tall. It's a fun place to relax and chat or read with our children.

A double hammock is also better than a single hammock if you intend to use it mainly for one person. More width and a bit more length, means you have more positions in which you can lay.

You can lay directly across the hammock if you have your legs bent. It makes a very comfortable half sitting position, from which you can see your surroundings.

If you prefer to lay as flat as possible, then laying diagonally in a 160cm wide cotton hammock will give you a flatter laying suface than you would get in a 120-140cm wide single hammock. It is just more comfortable.

If you have taken your hammock to a nice sunny area, then the extra fabric of a double hammock allows you to arrange it in such a way, that part of the hammock can shade your head. This is easy and comfortable.

It is easy to carry your hammock where you go because our Hamaca hammocks come complete with a nice matching shoulder bag, which is also big enough to fit a drink ,a book, and some tree bands along side your hammock. The bag is comfortable and the hammock is not heavy. Or should I say that the hammock is comfortable and the bag is not heavy?

The only downside is that you can't really claim there is not room for more people when you want it to yourself.

“Your best ideas, those eureka moments that turn the world upside down, seldom come when you’re juggling emails, rushing to meet the 5 P.M. deadline or straining to make your voice heard in a high-stress meeting. They come when you’re walking the dog, soaking in the bath or swinging in a hammock.” » Carl Honore
